big swoon, tiny house

For me home isn't a place, it's people. My dad, my younger brother and James. They are home to me. I hope that when James and I settle down and buy a house we are able to build a home where we can stay throughout the majority (if not all) of our children's lives. I want them to have that sense of home. I imagine it would be an amazing thing and I think we need it just as much as they would.

I lived in small houses growing up. It was more out of necessity than desire, at least I don't think my dad ever had a desire to have a gigantic house. It wasn't until we spent a year in this house that I realized how much I seriously dislike large homes. Don't get me wrong... they can be gorgeous, extravagant and full of wonder but for me, that is best left for vacations and special occasions. I want a home. A decent sized, easy to clean HOME.

Over the past 6-12 months I've noticed the "tiny house" movement. If you think they are crazy I don't blame you. I used to think it was nuts too. Granted, I highly doubt I could ever fit James, myself and children in a 540 sq ft home like the one pictured in this post but I could be very happy with 1000 sq ft if it was designed correctly.

So when scrolling through Tiny House Swoon I came across this quaint yet perfect little bungalow, owned and designed by Jessica Helgerson, just outside of Portland. I fell head over heels in love with the layout of this house and the large windows throughout each room. Seriously, modeling my dream home after something like this. Just wait (5-10 years) and you'll see! lol

If you love Cabin Porn and Bookshelf Porn then you should probably check this site out. If nothing else the houses are just beautiful on the eyes!

Have you already decided on your dream home? Would you consider living small or do you love maximum square footage?

  1. I so love all of those books laid out like that. It's perfect. I'd go crazy in 540 sq feet. I'm looking for between 1500 and 2000.

  2. I live in a small home but I wish I had that wall bookcase!! WOW! I wouldn't go crazy big for my future home but definitely more than the little studio I have now! =)

  3. Wow - that house is incredible! I think I could be very happy in a snug townhome, or a small house with a lot of land. It's mostly land that I'd be interested in I think.

  4. We LOVE living in small spaces together. In a lot of ways, it's all we've ever had! This place we're in now is bigger - two bedrooms, two bathrooms, but still one level. After living here for just a few months we both feel like it's too big for us right now, and we're looking to downsize in our next space...and I think this one is only about 1200 sq ft! Also, your new blog design is AWESOME. I just love it! I may have to get in touch with you soon about some update questions I have...if that's okay! There are a few things I want to change on my blog, but I just don't know how to do it. xoxo! eliza

  7. I am obsessed with bookshelf porn. Food porn isn't subtle enough for me - it's too OUT THERE and OBVIOUS - but bookshelves know how to play coy.

  8. I grew up in a small house too! I've always loved small homes, I think they're cozier and much easier to clean. It's a good thing I like them too, because right now I live in a Manhattan apartment (about 600 square feet) with one other human and two kittens! With the right layout though, anything can feel more spacious.

I love these photos, it's a lovely home.
